What are YOU seeing?

Based on last week's results, we've established that:
1. Privacy is basically something that protects us and our property and persons from attack
2. Privacy means a lot of different things to a lot of different people
3. We should be entitled to it in our everyday lives according to almost everyone because it's in the Constitution and because it's just part of something that we are guaranteed as citizens.

With this in mind, I have decided that my topic will be researching how privacy issues coincide with the use of behavioral ad targeting and marketing, specifically in Google AdWords and Facebook ads.

In order to do this, I'm going to ask for your help in order to see how Google AdWords and Facebook ads work in terms of targeting people. Everytime you log onto your Facebook this week, please post the ads that you see towards the right hand side of the page, and what words you have in your wall postings or personal information that may have made you a target for these ads. In addition, if you have a Gmail account, along the same lines, please post the ads that you see, and any target words in the emial that may have made you a potential target for that specific advertisement.

The purpose of this is to see exactly how targeted ads are over a variety of people.

Logged in Monday, saw an advertisement for the Red Sox, Protein Powder and an ad for a ticketing website.
Wednesday, I logged in and got an advertisement for some event for Emerson, sneakers, and something else I can't remember.
I also got some advertisements for work out wear and TV shows.

When I logged into Facebook this week, I saw a lot of things that seemed to come right from my profile, as if they were reading it. For instance, I got lots of ads for dancing shoes because I have dancing in my profile, as well as ballet and I think it's really interesting that these ads have something to do with the information that I post on Facebook. I guess I never really noticed that happened before. I kind of like it though because that way you're not foced to look at an ad that you don't want to look at. Too many sites do that.

My facebook gave me a lot ads for things like dancing shoes, and also concert updates. I think that some of my favorite musicians were playing live at a local venue and there was an ad for artists that I have listed under my musical interests on Facebookk. I guess i didn't really notice it
